Privacy Policy
Last updated 17 September 2026.
This policy covers the mobile applications published by RARankin, LLC. The two apps work very differently, so each one is described separately below.
RARankin, LLC does not sell personal information, does not share it with advertisers or data brokers, and does not use it for advertising or profiling. Questions and requests go to andrew@eiknet.com.
OpenEVSE
OpenEVSE is a local-network companion app for OpenEVSE charging stations. It has no accounts, no analytics, and collects no personal data. Nothing you do in the app is sent to RARankin, LLC, and there is no server operated by RARankin, LLC that the app talks to.
What the app connects to
- Your charger, on your local network. The app finds the charger over mDNS and communicates with it directly over your WiFi network. Charger settings and charging data stay between your phone and the charger; they do not leave your network through this app.
- Expo’s update service. The app is built with Expo and checks Expo’s update service to see whether a newer version of the app is available. This is the one connection the app makes outside your network. It is a request for an app update, not a report about you or your charger. Expo’s handling of such requests is governed by Expo’s privacy policy.
Permissions the app asks for
- Local Network (iOS). Required to discover and reach the charger on your WiFi network. Without it the app cannot find the charger.
- Location. On iOS and Android, reading the name of the WiFi network you are joined to (the SSID) requires location permission. The app uses it for that single purpose: to know which network you are on, and therefore which charger should be reachable. The app does not read your GPS position, does not track your location, and does not store or transmit location data.
Data stored on your device
Settings such as the charger you last connected to are stored locally on your device so the app can reconnect. Deleting the app removes them.
Overwatt
This section applies to Overwatt only. Overwatt is a cloud-backed EV charging monitoring app, and unlike OpenEVSE it does keep data on a server.
- Account. Using Overwatt requires an account. The account record holds the identifying details needed to sign you in and to contact you about the service, such as your email address.
- Charging data. When you connect charging equipment or a charging data source to Overwatt, the service stores the charging data it receives from that source so it can be shown back to you over time. You choose what to connect; disconnecting a source stops new data from being collected for it.
- Operational data. Ordinary technical records needed to run and secure the service, such as server logs, are kept for that purpose.
- How it is used. The data is used to operate the service and show you your own charging history. It is not sold, and it is not shared with advertisers or data brokers. It is disclosed only where needed to run the service (for example, the hosting infrastructure the service runs on) or where the law requires it.
Access and deletion
To request a copy of your Overwatt data, to correct it, or to delete your account and the data associated with it, email andrew@eiknet.com from the address on the account, or include that address in your message. Requests are handled directly by Robert Rankin. Once an account is deleted, the data associated with it is removed from the live service; copies may persist in routine backups for a limited period before ageing out.
Children
Neither app is directed at children, and neither knowingly collects personal information from children.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the revised version will be posted on this page with a new date at the top.
